Migration Overview (Pro)

Jan 23, 2026 | Knowledge Base

This guide provides an overview of the three primary methods available for migrating a WordPress site using WPvivid Backup Pro. Whether you prefer a fully automated process, a manual upload, or using cloud storage as an intermediary, WPvivid Pro streamlines the transition of your site to a new domain or server.

WPvivid Backup Pro offers robust migration features that enable users to transfer WordPress websites between domains, servers, and environments. Migration support is built into the plugin and leverages WPvivid’s backup and restore system to create reliable, portable site copies that can be restored in new locations.

Unlike basic migration tools that manually copy files and databases, WPvivid Backup Pro’s migration workflows use secure site connections, backup archives, and remote storage to streamline the transfer process while helping preserve site integrity and minimize downtime.

Supported Migration Methods

WPvivid Backup Pro provides three primary migration approaches:

  • 1. Auto Migration
A direct transfer method that connects two WordPress installations through a secure site key. It is designed to automatically clone and transfer the site from the source to the destination without manual backup downloads or uploads.
  • 2. Manual Migration
A traditional backup-and-restore technique where backups are created on the source site, downloaded, and then uploaded and restored on the destination site.
  • 3. Migration via Remote Storage
A hybrid method where backups are uploaded from the source site to a remote storage provider (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3), then restored from that remote storage on the destination site.

Each method offers flexibility to accommodate different hosting environments, connectivity constraints, and workflow preferences.

Auto Migration

What It Is

Auto Migration is a streamlined migration option that establishes a connection between the source and destination WordPress sites using a unique migration key. Once connected, WPvivid transfers the selected site data directly to the destination.

This method is ideal when both sites are publicly accessible and can communicate without firewall or connection restrictions.

How It Works

  • 1. A migration key is generated on the destination site.
  • 2. The site key is entered on the source site’s Auto Migration interface.
  • 3. WPvivid connects both sites and transfers site data over the connection.

When to Use It

Auto Migration is suitable when:

  • 1. Both source and destination sites are on publicly reachable servers.
  • 2. A direct site-to-site connection is possible.
  • 3. Manual upload/download isn’t desirable.
  • 4. Time and user interaction need to be minimized.

Advantages

  • 1. Fewer manual steps
  • 2. No need to manage backup files
  • 3. Quick connection-based transfer

Limitations

  • 1. Some hosts restrict cross-site connections.
  • 2. Local or development environments may not support this method.

Manual Migration

What It Is

Manual Migration is a migration method where the site is transferred using backup archives. This traditional method is highly reliable and does not require direct connection between sites.

How It Works

  • 1. A full backup (containing database and files) is created on the source site using WPvivid Backup Pro.
  • 2. The backup archive is downloaded to a local computer.
  • 3. On the destination site, WPvivid Backup Pro is used to upload the backup archive through:
    The plugin’s upload interface, or
FTP/hosting file manager (placing backup in the wpvividbackups directory)
  • 4. The backup is restored through the plugin’s restore interface.

When to Use It

Manual Migration is ideal when:

  • 1. Site connectivity between servers is restricted.
  • 2. One or both sites are in local development environments.
  • 3. Direct site-to-site migration is not possible.
  • 4. Remote storage workflows are preferred.

Advantages

  • 1. Works in environments without external connections.
  • 2. Offers full control over backup handling.
  • 3. Suitable for local, staging, or development sites.

Considerations

  • 1. Requires manual download/upload of backup files.
  • 2. Slightly more steps compared to auto migration.

Migration via Remote Storage

What It Is

Migration via Remote Storage combines the strengths of both manual and automated workflows. Backups are created on the source site and automatically uploaded to remote storage. The destination site retrieves and restores these backups directly from the cloud.

Remote storage methods supported by WPvivid Backup Pro include major cloud providers like Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, and others configured via the plugin.

How It Works

  • 1. A backup is created and uploaded to the designated remote storage provider.
  • 2. On the destination site, remote storage is connected via WPvivid Backup Pro.
  • 3. Retrieve the backup from the cloud storage to the destination server’s local directory and then proceed with the restoration.

When to Use It

Remote Storage Migration is ideal when:

  • 1. Multi-location access is advantageous.
  • 2. Users want to avoid downloading and re-uploading large backup files.
  • 3. Cloud storage is part of the workflow.

Advantages

  • 1. Reduces reliance on local file transfers.
  • 2. Supports large backup file handling.
  • 3. Fits modern cloud-centric workflows.

Limitations

  • 1. Requires remote storage configuration prior to migration.
  • 2. Dependent on internet speed for cloud backup transfers.

What Can Be Migrated

Across all migration methods, WPvivid Backup Pro supports migration of:

  • 1. WordPress Database
  • 2. WordPress Files
    Themes
    Plugins
    Uploads
    WordPress Core files
    wp-content
  • 3. Optional additional files or content depending on selection

This ensures that both site structure and content are preserved during migration.

Site Preparations and Best Practices

Before migrating, it is recommended to:

  • 1. Temporarily disable caching, security, and redirection plugins to avoid conflicts.
  • 2. Ensure that both source and destination environments have WPvivid Backup Pro installed.
  • 3. Confirm that remote storage (if used) is properly connected and functioning.
  • 4. Verify server permissions and connectivity if using auto migration.

These steps help avoid interruptions and improve the likelihood of a successful migration.

Summary

WPvivid Backup Pro provides multiple migration workflows to accommodate a wide range of scenarios:

  • 1. Auto Migration for direct site-to-site transfers.
  • 2. Manual Migration for reliable backup-and-restore workflows.
  • 3. Remote Storage Migration for cloud-based transfer efficiency.

These options ensure that WordPress sites can be safely and flexibly migrated between environments with minimal risk to content or configuration.
