We put tremendous effort to build a plugin that can play nice with as many website hosting providers as possible. However, that can’t happen as are thousands of different hosts, so are the divergent hosting parameters unique to each one of them.

The Advanced Settings section of the plugin is built to help users customize the parameters of the backups to the limits of their web hosts.

If you encounter an error when backing up, restoring or migrating your website, try to modify these parameters, this increases the chances for a successful backup.

What Are The Advanced Settings and How to Use Them?

Before we start, we’d like to explain what is disk I/O on a web server and what’s the relationship between disk I/O rate and PHP script execution timeout.

Disk I/O is an important performance metric for web servers; it indicates how many input/output operations can be performed per second on a server disk. For example, assuming that the disk I/O on your web server is 1MB/s, your website is 300MB, then if the maximum PHP script execution time on your server is less than 300s, every single backup/migration/restoration mission performed to the site may fail as the PHP script can be killed by the webserver. Many web hosting providers even some famous ones have set a limit to the disk I/O on their web servers to save server resources, but some web hosting providers are not limiting. Typically, there are two ways for you to check the disk I/O on your web server:

Ask your web host

Check it through cPanel

Despite the disk IO is completely uncontrollable on our side, we still try to increase the backup/migration/restoration success rate by providing these advanced settings on our plugin.

First, you can Enable optimization mode for web hosting/ shared hosting. The option provides many optimizing algorithms for running a backup/migration task within a web hosting/ shared hosting environment, which will drastically increase the backup/migration success rate.

The option will take effect automatically, all you need to do is to check the option.

If the backup/migration fails again, this shows your server resources are critically insufficient, then you should consider adjusting following advanced settings:

1. Choose if to Compress files or Only archive the files when the plugin creates a backup.

Webhosting/shared hosting: choose “Only Archive without compressing” option

Dedicated hosting: choose “Compress and Archive” option

Enabling Compress and Archive option will result in a longer backup process, which may trigger a PHP scripts execution timeout. It is, therefore, is not recommended on a shared hosting environment. If you keep getting backup timeout, choose Only Archive without compressing option.

However, you can choose the Compress and Archive option if you are hosting on a VPS or a dedicated server and have abundant resources. When the option is enabled, the plugin will compress the files in the backup process, which can save you great disk space.

2. Database access method

Choose the method to access your database: WPDB or PDO.

WPDB: It has a better compatibility, but the speed of backup and restore is slower.

PDO: It is recommended to choose PDO option if pdo_mysql extension is installed on your server, which lets you backup and restore your site faster.

3. Compress Files Every xxx MB

This option will split a task, for example, when the PHP execution time on your server is 120s and server disk IO is 1MB/s, then theoretically the maximum size of a website you can backup in single task is 120MB.

What if your website is larger than 120MB, say 1GB. That’s why we developed this option so that you can modify the option to compress files every 100MB, and then the whole task will be split into ten tasks.

In other cases, some web hosting providers limit large zip files (e.g., 200MB), and therefore splitting your backup into many parts is an ideal way to avoid hitting this limitation if you are running a big website.

If you encountered the Backup error: Too many resumption attempts, try to modify this option to a lower value like 100MB, which will drastically increase the backups/migrations success rate. Do not set this option lower than 50MB.

4. Exclude the files which are larger than xxx MB

Using the option will ignore the file larger than the defined size in MBs when backing up, ‘0’ (zero) means unlimited.

Backing up large files can also result in a backup/migration failure, you can use the option to exclude those relatively unnecessary large files from the backup, for example, videos and media files.

5. PHP script execution timeout for backup

This is the maximum PHP script execution time for WPvivid backup plugin to run a backup task, not the max execution time in your PHP configuration.

The default value is 900s, which is sufficient for a shared hosting account.

If you encounter a backup or migration failure caused by an exceeding the maximum PHP script execution time yet you are on a VPS or dedicated server, then try to set a larger value, but keep it under 3600s.

6. PHP script execution timeout for restore

This is the maximum PHP script execution time for WPvivid backup plugin to run a restore task, not the max execution time in your PHP configuration.

The default value is 1800s, which is sufficient for a shared hosting account.

If you encounter a restore timeout failure, then try to set a larger value, for example 3600s.

7. PHP Memory Limit for backup

This option is handy when backing up or migrating a database that has many tables or tables with many rows, say a table with 500,000 rows. Once set, the plugin will automatically apply a temporary PHP memory(256MB by default, recommended by official WordPress) from your web server for running the backup/migration. The applied value will be released after the task is complete. If you encounter a backup/migration failure, modify this value to 512MB or higher depending on the size of your database.

Note: The option will not work if the value you enter is not adequate for running of a task, then you’ll still get errors like: [error]type: 1, Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 20480 bytes) file:/home/subhwynw/public_html/wp-admin/includes/class-pclzip.php line:5492. In that case, please try to increase the value and try again.

8. PHP Memory Limit for restoration

Restoring a website, especially restoring a migrated website, will require a large number of data replacements, and will consume much more PHP memory than backing up a site. Therefore, when you encounter a restoration failure, try to double this value(256MB by default, recommended by official WordPress). Then the plugin will automatically apply a temporary PHP memory from your web server for running the restoration.

Note: The option will not work if the value you enter is not adequate, then you’ll still get errors like: [error]type: 1, Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 20480 bytes) file:/home/subhwynw/public_html/wp-admin/includes/class-pclzip.php line:5492. In that case, please try to increase the value and try again.

9. Chunk Size

Some web host has set a limit on the size of data package operated on their web servers, generally to 2MB, which will also limit the transfer rate on the web server. If you encounter a failure when migrating a website or backing up a website to remote storage, lower this value to 512KB or 256KB.

10. Retrying 3456789 times when encountering a time-out error

A web hosting or shared hosting server generally has limited server resources for a big site. When you perform a backup, you may face a backup or migration failure because of a shortage of server resources.

In this setting, you can increase the chances of a successful back up by setting the number of retries. The suggested retrying times for a shared web hosting environment is 6-9.

WPvivid Backup Plugin can help you transfer one WordPress site to another in just a few simple steps. It supports two migration methods:

1. Automatic Transfer

The simplest option for transfers between two sites and from a dev environment to a live server.

2. Manual Transfer:

The best option if you are experiencing any connection, permission, or database issues with the automatic transfer.

Whether you choose the automatic or manual transfer, the plugin must be installed on both websites.

Download and install WPvivid Backup Plugin on both the destination website and the site you want to copy. We recommend that you try the automatic transfer first, because it requires the least amount of steps for you to complete. The final steps, restoring the website, is the same for both processes.

Automatic Transfer

Step 1: Generate a Key

To transfer files safely between the two websites, you need to generate a key on the destination website. Once the key is generated, the destination website is ready to receive files.

On the destination website, go to WPvivid >> Key. Select the key’s expiration time. You can choose between 2, 8 and 24 hours. Then select the Generate button:

A key is generated for you by the plugin. Copy this key, as we are going to use it in step 2.

Step 2: Entering the key and starting the transfer

Return to the WordPress admin area of the site that you would like to copy.

Go to WPvivid >> Auto-Migration tab and add your key:

Select one of the three available options:

Database + Files (Entire website)

All files (Exclude Database)

Only Database

Click Clone then Transfer to begin.

During the entire transfer, you can monitor the progress with the progress bar. You will be notified of the Database Size, File Size, Total size, Uploaded, Speed, and Network Connection.

Below are two examples of how the different stages of the transfer are reported:

How long the transfer takes depends on your connection speed and the size of your website.

When the transfer is complete, the following message will be displayed:

When you have completed these steps, please skip to Restoring the website.

Manual Transfer

Log in to the website that you would like to copy, and go to WPvivid >> Backup & Restore.

Step 1: Create a backup

A detailed explanation on how to create a backup is part of our Get Started series, please see Get Started: Create a Manual Backup.

Step 2: Download the backup to your computer

Select the Download option from the list of available backups.

Note: If the backup is stored in remote storage, our plugin will retrieve the backup to your web server first.

Step 3: Upload the backup to your destination website

There are two suggested ways to upload the backup to your destination website.

Option one:

1. On the destination website, go to WPvivid >> Backup & Restore.
2. Select the Upload option and upload the backup file(s):

Note: If you got multiple parts/files, please select and upload them at once.

Option two:

1. Upload the backup files to the destination website via a ftp client: The plugin has automatically created a folder for your backups at: /wp-content/wpvividbackups

2. Make sure that all the backup files are placed in the correct folder.

Restoring The Website

Step 1: Find the files in backup list

Head over to the destination website and go to WPvivid >> Backup & Restore, you will see the newly transferred files has been automatically added to the list of available backups:

Step 2: Restoring the backup

A detailed guide on how to restore the backup can be found here: Get Started: Restore Your Site from a Backup.

Important:

The restore function will replace the site’s themes, plugins, uploads, database and/or other content directories with the existing equivalents in the selected backup.

Click the Restore button after the backup in the list, you will be asked to confirm the changes. You will then be able to follow the process through the log, where you can see files being extracted and restored.

Congratulations!

With the migration complete, please test your website carefully to make sure it works as expected.

How to Migrate A Site to A New Host And Keep the Domain Unchanged

The correct procedure to migrate a website but keep the same domain would be:

Create a full backup (database + files) of the source site and download it to your computer.

Go to your domain provider’s website and point your domain name to the new hosting. See this example tutorial.

Install WordPress on the new host and install WPvivid Backup Plugin.

Upload the backup to the target site(using WPvivid plugin’s upload function or using an FTP to upload the backup to the wp-content/wpvividbackups folder) then restore.

Check and make sure the new site works as expected, then delete the source site.

Or if you’d like to use the ‘Auto Transfer’ option, follow the steps below:

Install WordPress on the target server and make sure it is accessible and connectable. You can still install and access WordPress when you do not have another domain name for the target site, you can use the IP address of the new server. See this example tutorial or contact your web host for help if you are not sure how to do this.

Use WPvivid auto migration feature to transfer files from the source to the target site.

Point your domain name to the new server and make sure it takes effect(it will take you to the new site when you visit the domain). To do that, go to the target site backend > Settings > General > change the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) to the domain name > Save changes.

Restore the site using the transferred backup.

Check and make sure the new site works as expected, then delete the source site.

Troubleshooting

If you are experiencing issues with the automated transfer, please try to the manual transfer first. Here some known issues and the solutions:

Error: A key is required

This message is presented if you have accidentally clicked the transfer button before pasting your key.

Error: 404 Error. Page Not Found

If you encounter this error when you click on pages or menus on the site after migration. Please go to Settings > Permalink, and click Save Changes button.

Generally, our plugin updates the permalinks automatically when completing the processing of migration, but it could fail to update the permalinks on some webhostings. In that case, you can update it manually.

cURL error 28 -Operation timeout

Please try again. If this problem persist, try to increase the memory limit in your servers php.ini file. If you are not comfortable editing the file, contact your webhost support and see if they can help.

Transfer failed: Error establishing a database connection

If this error is presented when you select Database + Files (Entire website), select the Only Database option instead and then attempt the transfer again.

If the transfer is successful, you can then select the All Files (Exclude Database) option to transfer the rest of your site.

You will need to restore both backup files on your destination site.

The transfer is taking too long

If there are no error messages and if the progress bar is moving, then the transfer is still being handled. How long the transfer takes depends on your connection speed and the size of your website.

More issues and corresponding solutions can be found on our troubleshooting issues on WPvivid Backup plugin.

There are 6 blocks on the settings page:

Block 1

1. Backup retention

Define the total number of backup copies to be retained on the backup destination.

2. Calculate file and database size

Choose if you want the plugin to calculate and show the file and database size before running a backup.

3. Display WPvivid menu

Choose if you want to display the plugin menu in admin navigation menu or top admin bar.

4. Merge all backup files into single package

Choose whether to all the backup files into single package when a backup completes.

This will save great disk spaces, though takes longer time to creating a backup. We recommended you check the option especially on sites with insufficient server resources.

5. Keep backups in local after upload to remote

Keep storing the backups in localhost(web server) after they were uploaded to remote storage.

6. Delete WPvivid folder

Delete the /wpvividbackups folder and all backups in it when deleting WPvivid Backup plugin.

Block 2

7. Backup folder

Name the folder where your backup files will be stored in localhost(web server).

8. Display domain in backup

Choose if you want to display or hide your domain name in the backup file name.

Block 3

9. Remove out of date backups

Outdated backups refer to the oldest backups when your backup retention is reached. They will be automatically deleted one by one when you take a new backup, but you can use this option to delete them all of them at once.

Click the Remove button to delete outdated backups.

Block 4

10. Email report

To be notified after a backup is processed, enable this option.

You can then choose to be notified by email when a backup is completed or only when the backup fails.

Block 5

11. Clean junk files

WPvivid Backup Plugin lets you do some housekeeping after backups and restorations.

Calculate Sizes shows you how much space on your servers the backups are occupying.

Choose the several options available then click the Empty button to free up space by deleting junk files from your server.
